Easter in Kenya
The Easter period was used by Kibet4Kids to give out shoes and visit some primary schools.
Kibet4Kids recently received more than 100 pairs of brand new shoes from Runner’s World magazine. In the last months we spend time giving out those shoes to children in Kenya. We were also given 30 pairs of ‘The Millenium shoe’, a pair of shoes that was especially designed to ask attention for the Millennium Development Goals, goals that were established by the United Nations in the year 2000. Kibet4Kids is focusing on millennium goals number 2 (achieving universal primary education) and number 4 (reducing child mortality rates).
Some of you may wonder what shoes have to do with education. Well, maybe you didn’t know that Kenyan children are sometimes send home from school because they don’t wear proper shoes. Also, walking around without shoes can be hazardous to one’s health; it’s easy for children to get an infection in the foot and it’s also unhygienic to use the public toilet in the school without wearing shoes. So, children without shoes are at a higher risk of missing classes.
On another occasion Kibet4Kids went to visit some primary schools. Our first intention was to see the condition of those schools and to see if and how we could contribute something. Secondarily, we brought hundreds of pens and pencils that were donated by Toby Tanser from Shoe4Africa. It was a simple gift, but it made the kids very happy.
During Easter, our director Hilda Kibet invited a group of 10 impoverished children. She had a small lunch with them and gave all of them a pair of shoes.
