First classroom opened
We proudly annouce that, after several months of hard work, Kibet4Kids finished the construction of it's first classroom for Kolol primary school. This classroom was opened on February 4th.
Teachers, pupils, parents and other community members were all present during the exuberant ceremony on February 4th. After 5 trees were planted on the school terrain, there was time for a musical performance by the pupils, followed by speeches. The most prominent guest was mister Chepkitony, who was the Member of Parliament from this region between 2002 and 2012. Chepkitony, being an MP, started Kolol primary school and told everyone how happy he was that Kibet4Kids continued the work that he started. At the end of the ceremony, the classroom - which was provided with desks and chairs - was immediately used by the pupils of class four.
Hilda Kibet: “I am so happy to have reached this result, about one year after we started with Kibet4Kids. Thanks to Kibet4Kids, the pupils of class 4 don't have to sit outside, or share a room with another class. Many people said they are surprised with the quality of the classroom and the desks. We intentionally choose quality; 100 years from now this will all still be here, so many generations will profit from what we have put down. I'm proud of what we did, together with our donors and with the community of Kolol. It's like topsport: when you set a goal for yourself and you go for it 100%, then many things are possible”.
Despite the fact that we chose for high quality, we managed to spend less than we budgeted. As you can read elsewhere on this site, we budgeted around 678.000 Ksh for a classroom. Through comparing prices of building materials, and making good deals with hardware stores, only 620.000 Ksh (around 7300 US dollars) turned out to be enough.
In the mean time we started building the second classroom, which will be used by class 5 of Kolol. Our goal is to build a total of five classrooms (for class 4-8), a library an administration block and a sanitary building. All classrooms will be provided with desks, chairs and books.
