Despite the unique situation since March 2020, we are happy to inform you that we have been able to do a lot of work in supporting impoverished Kenyan children. The last time we informed you was in May 2019. At that time, we had completed the construction of one classroom for Kamokos Primary. Since then we have built another five classrooms. Currently 139 pupils are enrolled in Kamokos Primary and by next month they expect to receive another 60.
In 2018 we built the first classroom, which was fully financed by Re Medical Group from the Netherlands. In 2019 we built a second classroom with the help of BIBIA BV. And 2020 was in some ways our best year. Despite that fact that all schools in Kenya closed from March 2020 until 5 January 2021 (due to COVID-19), the year was not lost. The ‘Eerste Christelijk Lyceum’ raised more than 13.000 euro, our donors added another 5000 euro to that and the Wild Geese Foundations (Wilde Ganzen) added 50% on top of that, which brought our budget to 28.000 euro. Including the funds we had and what we received in 2020, we had a budget of more than 35.000 euro. With that we have done the following:
- We built class 3, 4, 5 and 6
- We supplied each classroom with 30 desks and chairs
- Three of the classrooms got their own lockable bookshelf
- We laid down a one-mile-long water pipe (3 feet deep into the ground), which delivers clean drinking water.
Especially the construction of the waterline caused lots of excitement in Kamokos. For the first time in history the people of Kamokos have clean drinking water! There is a source with clean water in Kessup, which is a nearby village. But the construction of a waterline to deliver that clean drinking water to Kamokos was way too expensive for the community. There has always been a lack of clean drinking water and besides that, the community was unable to spray their crops during the dry season. Kibet4Kids made that waterline now, and also brought two tanks that can store 10.000 liters at the school.
Currently the school has six classrooms and is fully in use. Two of the classrooms are used by the Pre-Primary (nursery school class one and two). Until early 2020 these 84 toddlers were being taught in a kind of store, made of iron sheets. The county government promised to build two classrooms for them, but as long as that is not done, the nursery school will use the classrooms of the primary school. They did receive little chairs and tables from the county.
Kibet4Kids plans to continue its project at Kamokos Primary, by building an ICT-room and an administration block. We want to thank all our sponsors and donors: without you, none of this would have been possible!
